Human Life Begins at Conception The question that we can argue is not when did/does human life begin. Rather, the ques- tion is, when does a human BEING begin. (Irving, 1999, pg. 29) A human being is the product of fertilization. Therefore, he or she is a single-cell embryonic zygote, an organism with 46 chromo- somes, the number required of a member of a human organism. This human being immediately produces human proteins and enzymes, directs his or her own further growth and development as a newly existing, genetically unique, live human individual. (Irving, 1991, pg. 28) After fertil- ization happens, it does not become another kind of thing. It simply grows and gets bigger. Human Life Does not Begin at Conception Pregnancy begins with the implantation of the blastocyst, approximately three to seven days. (Irving, 1999, pg. 35) The product of fertilization is just a blob, or a bunch of cells, or a piece of the mother’s tissues. (Irving, 1999, pg. 29) The immediate product of fertilization is po- tentially a human being or only possibly a human being, not really an existing human being. A
