actuarial science, I am aware that I will need to draft up reports of potential financial risk for different firms. These reports will surely need to be very clear and complete. I will have to address all potential risk factors and explain how a given firm can avoid them. Flow will help immensely with this; seamlessly guiding my reader how to address incoming problems will be of utmost importance. Evidently, I can already see how important flow is to me as a student, and how important it will be to me in the future. The second area of my writing that I have paid special attention to this semester is thesis. Looking back on my career as a writer, I can say my major weakness has been defending my thesis throughout the entire paper. Too many times I stray from my thesis, defending a point that is foreign to my topic. Again, to fix this problem I needed more discipline. Looking back, I realize that I was commended for what I did well in high school; I was not usually penalized for presenting points off of the thesis if they made sense. To my benefit, the focus on context and clarity in English 112 has forced me to stay on task with my thesis. In Unit I, my essay’s thesis was that being a twin provided me with more benefits than holdbacks. My goal was to use concrete examples to prove this. However, I didn’t even realize I was straying away from the thesis when I began to introduce how satisfying my ‘twin moments’ are. Before I knew it, I had a page long paragraph with some detailed descriptions, but it had little to do with the paper. Looking back on it now, I can see the comments: “Transition needed—and how does it relate to your thesis?” Admittedly, the comment elicits a smile. What was I thinking? Yes, some phrases were well-worded in the paragraph, but I needed the discipline to take it completely out. That self-control is something that I now have and it was developed throughout the course.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
