- Agency becoming involved with gender, ‘men make their history but they don’t make
it as they please’, under systems established already; gender as a process is
something like that, it is not a possession but a process we take part of it that we are
not perfectly free to choose
- Gender becomes proporial purpose being innovated, choice in this context signifies
interpretation of entrenched cultural norms – we can kind of choose our gender, but
we can’t make it as we please (there is agency but there is also structure)
- Gender is an active style living one’s body

- Gender and sex are discursively reproduced and enacted by people (socially
constructed)
- But they are not, thereby, reducible to language and/or ‘choice’
- Gender is an active style of living one’s body in the world
- The body is thus experienced as a mode of becoming
