The discontinuing of Terri’s feeding tube was not passive suicide but rather discontinuing of a treatment that never should have been considered permanent. The medical goal is not to prevent death from ever happening but rather to prevent an untimely death. Terri was given a feeding tube to enable the medical team time to evaluate her condition and establish brain activity or lack thereof. It was never intended to prolong her life in a persistent vegetative state for years to come.
