Sitting in memorial union asking people to sit down for 5 minutes so I can ask them a series of questions
I will ask a handful of questions, as time permits, and I’ll end every five-minute interview by asking them where
they grew up before moving to Madison
My goal is to find a good handful of people to ask in one hour
My questions are:
Is sexual identity different from gender identity?
Is gender identity disorder a mental disorder?
What age does nonconformity usually begin? The most common ages?
What does it mean to be transgender?
How about gender nonconforming?
Is there a polite way to ask about someone’s gender identity?
Came in super confident and excited to talk, believe that sexual identity and gender identity are very much so
different, one is what you perceive yourself in terms of gender and one is what you inherent emotionally, doesn’t
believe that gender identity disorder is a mental disorder because it’s a normal thing people struggle with,
believed that nonconformity starts at a young age when you haven’t learned about all of these issues and
stereotypes, didn’t want to give their definition of transgender because they didn’t know how to be the most
polite about it, they are from
Sat down and I explained I’d be asking about sexual identity and they immediately got annoyed and stood up but
before they left, I asked where they were from and they said
Came in telling me they don’t have much solid information on gender because they’ve never taken classes on it
before, told me the difference between sexual identity and gender identity was something that you’re given at
birth vs. something that you feel inside, gender nonconforming means someone that can feel however they want
to feel and aren’t conformed by ‘male’ or ‘female’, wouldn’t be sure how to politely ask so just wouldn’t because
they don’t care, I could tell they felt a little uncomfortable during the questions but continued to try their best to
ask ,they are from
Long Island, NY
Super confident has taken multiple classes on gender before, gender identity disorder is not a mental disorder,
they knew nonconformity starts at a young age because children don’t understand the conformities, being
transgender doesn’t just mean you are a person going through a transformation, transgender means that your
gender identity at birth is different from your gender identity at the moment, gender nonconforming means they
are not strictly with conventional, there isn’t one exact way to say what gender are you politely, they are from
Believes that sexual identity and gender identity are the same and that if you act one way than you should be
perceived as the gender, doesn’t believe that gender identity is a mental disorder understands that people get
