9. Was this lab more successful in determining the purification of the impurity than the melting point lab? If so, how? How could you tell if your mixture was purified, by looking at your spots? No it was not that much more successful in determining the purification rather than using melting points. Using both the melting points and TLC together give us clear information and work somewhat in seeing if the purification worked, but the two of them separate do not do a good job at it. There is a lot of room for error in the TLC, such as the different amounts of concentration (for example, the dilutions). It appear to be pure because there isn’t another spot, when actually there just wasn’t enough mixture in it. TLC has low sensitivity compared to melting points. Even though Melting points aren’t that much better. The melting points were recorded in a wide range, leaving more room for error since estimations had to be made.
