The atmosphere which foreigners experienced was toxic. Additionally, workers revealed, to the nation, that they had freedom, however, rights was a different question. As this information made its way through to the news, people made an effort to change the way country was functioning. People of all sorts had a vision of what type of government the country should be run, thus organizing their own groups. “The advent of the “new political history” has transformed people’s understanding of the political system. The political parties of the twentieth century, Republican, Democratic, along with other minor parties, were not bland coalitions of interests with virtually the same amorphous ideology, but rather with each party blurring what is left of its image during campaigns to appeal to the large independent center.” 7 Progressives pushing for social legislation had more success than the local level. the United States of America lacked the real definition of democracy. Publicizing the corruption of the government, enforcing mandatory change to improve what the country lacked. In the novel, The Jungle, there are several people that hold high positions, portraying the corruption of power in the nation, such as Phil Conner and Mike Scully. These two men are a representation of how the authority at the time undisclosed the country’s poor state. Furthermore, the government effortlessly tried to surpass the state of factories without improving their own governmental system.
