problem, 3. An answer to an important question most common in academic research Discuss the role of note-taking in the research process generally To organize, centralize, summarize, improve your understanding and aid in learning, record your own reactions. Not to record all the useful info that we encounter Point out stages of the research and writing process where note-taking can be especially important If only time to record, take notes verbatim. If not, take summary notes (a map) Remember the information and the source Hand-write for short-term, better recall. Digital notes for long-term, storing and searching notes Contrast everyday notes with research notes and describe the standards for research notes Everyday notes for: 1. Documentary purposes , to create a chain of custody for all ideas and contributions from others; to remind ourselves days/weeks/months later how we thought about; paper trail for others to follow when replicating work 2. Creative purposes: to organize our thinking about specific research topics, to find connections b/t scattered sourced and ideas, Research notes should include sources and authors, so one can refer back to them in the future Apply one of these terms – provenance, pedigree, verifiability – to the standards for research notes Provenance is crucial for DOI’s and citation for the original author or person.

Give examples of how each piece of note-taking advice in class can help you avoid major problems Paraphase when you can, to save time and to recreate the notes through your own thinking and perspective Think like an archivist so that you cipher and go through all of the documents necessary to confirm notes and articles Leave space for a summary: to review and evaluate the notes taken to better understand the material Include a references section: usually necessary, but if not, best to have a URL at least so you know where you got the information from to refer to Include other sections: optional, but make other sections for notes and things that you can refer to that do not involve any other component Page numbers: to cite. Crucial element in APA style Name at least three apps or software that support digital note-taking and contrast their key features Onenote: filing cabinet, browse through folders Evernote: kind of like a digital notepad, use tags, with notebook sections(bad for a lot of notes)(good for styluses) plain text Google drive: editing, backing up data, cloud drive(can recover data) Summarize major arguments for and against taking notes by hand versus taking notes via typing Paper is better for memory and learning retention, because the act of writing helps stimulate the brain to remember better. Better for short-term Digital is better for cloud-based notes, folders, and storing for the future. It’s best to use this feature when you want to refer to it later, but summarize

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
