About the Workflow Mode Property 138 For example, assume a transaction that involves the end user, an insurance agent, cannot be finished because some information is missing, such as the social security number for a spouse that is required for an insurance policy quote to be considered finished. In this example, when the insurance agent eventually obtains the social security number after suspending the interactive workflow process, the insurance agent can resume the workflow from within the Inbox, then enter the social security number to finish the entry of the quote. After the workflow is finished, the Workflow Engine removes the interactive workflow from the Inbox. An interactive workflow process that is suspended is placed in the Inbox in order to allow the owner of the workflow to track and explicitly resume the workflow. Table 24 describes work that is performed when a workflow process is suspended. Items to consider include: To realize the behavior described in Table 24 , the Auto Persist flag for the suspended workflow process must contain a check mark. An interactive workflow process that is suspended in the Inbox is removed from the Inbox after the workflow finishes, then terminates. Comparison of Suspension to Persistence of a Workflow Process There is a difference between suspending a workflow process and persisting a workflow process. If a workflow is suspended, and if the Auto Persist flag for the workflow is set to TRUE, then the workflow can be persistent. For example, with implicit suspension, if an end user leaves a view that the workflow process navigated the user to, then the instance of the workflow is saved in the in-memory cache. In this case, no Inbox item is generated. If the user logs out, and if the Auto Persist flag set to TRUE, then an Inbox item is generated in the cache for the workflow. Therefore, the Inbox item is visible only when the user logs out, then logs back in. Table 24. Work That Is Performed When a Workflow Process Is Suspended Suspension Description Result Explicit suspension. The user clicks Suspend. The workflow process is saved to the database and placed in the Inbox. Implicit suspension. The user leaves a view that is part of the workflow process. If the workflow process must be removed from the in-memory cache, then: The workflow is placed in the Inbox The workflow is saved to the database Examples of when the workflow must be removed from the in-memory cache is when the cache is full, or when the end user logs out.

If the user navigates in this way, then the interactive workflow remains in memory so it can be resumed later in the same user session. As it is uncommon
