Discuss briefly the shop floor control in production management with the help of the diagram. (25 marks) Shop floor control is concerned with the release of the production orders to the factory controlling the progress of the order through the various work centers, and acquiring current information on the status of the order. The simplest possible terms, shop floor control deals with managing the work in process. A typical shop floor control system consists of three phases. 1. Order release 2. Order scheduling 3. Order progress Other release The order release phase of the shop floor control provides the documentation needed to process a production order through the factory. The collection of documents is called the shop packet. It consists of Route sheet Material questions to draw the necessary materials from inventory. Job cards or other means to report direct labor time devoted to the order; also used to indicate progress of the order through the factory. Move tickets to authorize the material handling personnel to transport parts between works centers in the factory if this type of authorization is required. Past list, if required for assembly jobs The order release is driven by two inputs. The first is the authorization to produce that drives from the master schedule. This authorization proceeds through the various planning functions that provide timing and scheduling information. The second input to the order release module is the engineering and manufacturing databases, which provide the product structure and process planning information needed to prepare the various documents that accompany the order through the shop.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
