DIABETIC DIET 3 carbohydrate intake (Mayo Clinic, 2015). Nutrition and regular exercise on a daily basis are key components of a healthy lifestyle, especially when diagnosed with Diabetes. Having a balanced meal throughout the day along with refraining from a sedentary lifestyle will allow the blood glucose levels to stay within normal range (National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease, 2016). When constructing a meal plan, patients should incorporate a lot of fruits and vegetables, chicken or turkey, lean meats, and no-fat dairy products, in their diets (Michigan Medicine, 2018). According to Mayo Clinic, there are several methods that make it easy for individuals to balance out their diets; the plate method, counting carbohydrates, the exchange list system, and the glycemic index (Mayo Clinic, 2015). The plate method was established by the American Diabetes Association, in which seven-steps are utilized to plan a meal using a nine-inch plate that mainly consist of vegetables. When making a plate, the patient should fill one-half with vegetables, one-quarter with a protein, and the remaining quarter with a whole-grain food item (Mayo Clinic, 2015). When counting carbohydrates, it is important to read the label of each food item that is consumed and write them down. Carbohydrates have the greatest impact on blood glucose levels because they break down the sugar, or glucose, in the blood (Michigan Medicine, 2018). The exchange list system is great for patients that are able to have self-discipline and are able to control their impulses in indulging in foods from different categories (Michigan Medicine, 2018).
