can be seen that the anime’s depiction of Satan was not the traditional image of the Devil, instead it was a different perspective where his actions are actually defined by his desire to protect the other demons. To understand this drastic change in appearance of Satan, learning of his origin across different cultures is crucial. In Elaine Pag’s article “The devil in the details - The Origin of Sa- tan”, she discusses the origins of Satan in different cultures and religions. In the Western version of Satan, heavily influenced by Christianity, Satan is often viewed as an entity who has “tempted people to demonize those who are innocent, and has thereby contributed to human sinfulness” (Pag 3). However, in Buddhism’s version of the Devil, “Marra is the demon that attempted to stray Buddha away from his path of enlightenment” (Pag 4). Although the depictions of Satan are different in both religions, there are some common themes between them. Likewise in Christianity’s version of Satan, Buddhism’s version also describes Satan as an evil entity that tempts people into the wrong path. As seen in the previous paragraph, this common
