Age of Enlightenment The Revolutionary war was a battle between Scholatism and Rationalism. Thomas Jefferson wrote that the power of the government is derived from the governed. Up until that time, it was claimed that kings ruled nations by the authority of God. The Declaration was a radical departure from the idea of divine authority. The attitude of the age was one of enlightened reason, tolerance, and free thought. Through enlightened reason all could arrive at the truth.

Science Combine rationalism and empiricism into one. Science takes observations and experiences and uses reason to describe general rules and laws that govern the natural world. When empiricism is added to reason it allows individuals with different biases to come to the same conclusion.

Science can help us find truth “There are two ways to find truth— both useful, provided we follow the laws upon which they are predicated. The first is the scientific method. It can require analysis of data to confirm a theory or, alternatively, establish a valid principle through experimentation. The scientific method is a valuable way of seeking truth.” -- Elder Richard G. Scott, Truth: The Foundation of Correct Decisions, October Conference 2007
