Everyone thinks the Miller’s Tale is hilarious, except for the actual carpenter (reeve) - The Miller tells the Reeve to tell a story then… the Reeve says that since the Miller’s story makes fun of a carpenter, that he will do the same and make fun of a Miller - Simkin: miller who grinds grain for a college but steals some of it too - John and Alan: students know of this dishonesty and want to keep an eye on him... a trick - Simkin knows of this trick so he plans his own trick; he sets their horses free, so John and Alan run after it… Simkin steals their flour and makes a cake with it - The students stay the night… Simkin gets very drunk that night and so does his wife - Alan sneaks into bed with Simkin’s daughter - John moves the baby’s cradle to trick Simkin’s wife into bed with him - It is dark… Alan gets out of bed then comes back and is confused by the moved cradle, so he ends up in Simkin’s bed and thinks he is with John - Because he thinks he is with John, he boasts about his sex with Simkin’s daughter - The Miller wakes up and is raged so he begins to fight Alan… the students beat up the Miller - Payback theme: and also, a Fabliau - Wife hits Simkin with a stick, aiming for John - The Miller, the wife (daughter of celibate priest… priest not supposed to be married but he was) and her baby boy, and their young daughter - Very bad and immoral characteristics of this family
