Patient Safety Act
The reason this came about was to reduce the risk to patients as they work with their
health care providers to improve their health. The act became law after growing
concerns that human error on behalf of the medical community was endangering the
health and well-being of patients. This act also establishes a voluntary reporting system
to help resolve potential quality and safety issues within the health care field. The U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services (2005) notes that this Act also authorizes
the “HHS to impose civil money penalties for violations of patient safety and
confidentiality” (para. 1).
The Joint Commission has come up with a set of Core Measures that guide hospitals in
their treatment plans for various illnesses. These areas are:
 Venous Thromboembolism
 Heart Failure
 Emergency Department
 Surgical Care Improvement Project
 Substance Use
 Tobacco Treatment
 Pneumonia Measures
 Immunization
 Acute Myocardial Infarction

 Children’s Asthma Care
 Hospital-Based Inpatient Psychiatric Services
 Perinatal Care
 Stroke
 Hospital Outpatient Department
The measures obtained not only help to improve patient safety and quality, but were
enacted in order for hospitals to maintain their formal accreditation. Here is a two-
