He found each island has different species of finch Those who had adaptations that helped them live in their environments, outlived those who didn’t Darwin’s Puzzle Variation Organisms vary in phenotypic quality We all have similarities, but how we look and express traits we have is different It happens in all species, for ex: birds have diff wing length, trunk strength, etc

Inheritance Variations are thought of phenotypes Lamark believed all traits are inherited Darwin didn’t believe same thing as larmark, only some traits would be inherited and only those who were inherited played a role in evolution Its mostly genetics, not epigenetics that are a mode of inheritance Selection Survival Survival only matters so much to help us reproduce, it has little to do with evolution Reproduction is driving force of evolution NOT survival Heritable traits are those passed on by genes Conspecific are members of the same species Darwin’s Theory of Sexual Selection Rare to see peacocks fly: tails are costly in energy hard for them to fly Why have tails if they are costly? Darwin didn’t get it so why did it evolve? Sexual selection Sexual selection is natural selection that acts differently on different sexes they are NOT different things, one is a special case of the other Darwin’s theory of SS originated from the fact that there are structures that don’t help survival/reproduce How do we get so much differentiation among sexes when they have the same problems in the same environment: food, predators, diseases

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
