Your TA will instruct you on how (1) to properly cite in-text, as well as (2) to create a proper bibliographic entry compliant with the American Sociological Association Style Guide . Homework : Your homework is to complete the literature review assignment. This is due in two weeks ( either Wednesday, September 27 for Wednesday lab or Monday, October 2 for Monday lab) . Please bring a hard copy of your work to lecture on the day that it is due. Also, please post your summaries to the Blackboard discussion board for your classmates to read. These summaries will be used later in the semester when you actually begin putting together your project, so try to make them as strong as possible. Brainstorming Research Topics (~15 to 20 minutes) In your groups, discuss possible research ideas related to issues of generosity, gift-giving, helping behavior, or altruism. Each group should come up with approximately 3 to 5 different research questions related to either the causes or the effects of generosity, gift-giving, or altruism. These research questions can involve any domain of social life and do not need to be restricted to the individual-level. They, for instance, could involve questions about organizational giving or cross- cultural differences in acts of generosity. They could also involve aspects of giving behaviors in
dating relationships or friendships. For each question, indicate whether a satisfactory answer would be descriptive or explanatory in nature and make sure to define key terms such as generosity, gift- giving, altruism or any other concept that your group introduces. The purpose of this portion of the lab is get you thinking about what you might want to study in this class. Group members Names: Your group’s 3 to 5 research questions: What prevents you from giving panhandlers money or food? What motivates you to give panhandlers money or food? What are your thoughts about panhandlers?
