Asthma and Stepwise Management Quick-relief, or rescue, medications are used as needed for rapid, short-term symptom relief during an asthma attack or before exercise if your doctor recommends it (Mayo Clinic, 2018). According to Arcangelo and Peterson (2017) regardless of the severity of asthma, all patients need to be prescribed a short-acting beta 2 -adrenergic agonist (SABA) bronchodilator for quick relief of acute symptoms. Some of these medications are Albuterol, Xopenex, Terbutaline, Bitolterol, Pirbuterol, Metaproterenol (, 2018). The symptoms of an acute attack include, but are not limited to, coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath. These bronchodilators are used to relax the airway muscles thereby removing the symptoms of an acute attack and allowing easier breathing for the patient. Other medications that can be used are Atrovent and oral and intravenous corticosteroids. Arcangelo and Peterson (2017) state that the use of these medications can cause tremors, headaches, restlessness, anxiety, and fast and unever heartbeats in adults and children. Stepwise Approach to Treatment and Management of Asthma Once the diagnosis of asthma is made and the severity of the disease is assessed, the healthcare professional will need to ascertain the proper level of the stepwise treatment regimen.
