Hypothesis: an explicit, testable prediction about the conditions under which an event will occur - if I had this theory that as people are together for longer the frequency that they talk about self decreases; i expect that a group of people together for less than 1 year will talk about themselves more than a group of people together for over 5 years - theory: references to self decrease over time - hypotheisis: those together for less than one year will refer to self more often Basic and Applied Research - Basic Research - goal is to increase our understanding of human behavior; how well a hormone effects a neurotransmitter (micro!) - often, designed to test a specific hypothesis from a specific theory - Applied Resaerch - goal is to enlarge our understanding of naturally occurring events - additional goal is to find solutions to practical problems (ex. how a pill relieves symptoms; more broad approach) Example: Do females make better practitioners than males?
