Benjamin Britten provided a moving response to the brutality of WWII by combining Latin prayer with the poetry of a fallen soldier in his 85-minute-long War Requiem ± Jazz : Jazz musicians struggled to have their music accepted as serious artistic expression . Some experimented with hard bop , combining aspects of jazz with other musical styles . Tito Puente —a .k .a . “El Rey del Timbal”—lured in audiences with his catchy Latin rhythms . John Coltrane combined Ornette Coleman’s free jazz techniques with other musical characteristics, such as pedal tones, to honor the victims of the 16 th St . Baptist Church bombing in 1963 . ± Film Music : Leonard Bernstein combined jazz and Latin musical styles with mixed meters and bolder harmonies in his score for West Side Story Henry Mancini found success with his music written for Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Days of Wine and Roses , and The Pink Panther Many of the James Bond films, including Goldfinger , Thunderball , and You Only Live Twice , contained songs that resembled rock and popular music of the early 1960s . ± Rock and Roll/Folk : by 1962 FM radio stations began to play a role in disseminating new, more diverse styles of popular music Motown record producer Berry Gordy used his “Hitsville” formula to help propel groups like the Marvelettes and the Supremes, to the top of the charts . One of his most successful protégés was twelve- year-old Stevie Wonder .
