Rebellion: collective adaption of individuals? That is cognizant that alienation is a result of dominant goals and standards o Compare to ressentiment: powerlessness of expressing recurring hate, envy, hostility o Occurs if the institutional system is a barrier to the satisfaction of goals ! Ex. Glass ceiling or racism o Goal: to stay a part of society, but transition between social groups Durkheim’s anomie: 1910 normlessness; society not instilling morals Social Anomie: 1970 mismatch between goals and means Modern Times by Charlie Chaplin Work has become too monotonous and overwhelming, Chaplin goes into like a nervous breakdown and goes crazy > fired Middle of Great Depression (20s/30s), so he can’t find more work Gets into jail numerous times on accident o Realizes that in jail he is provided with food and a place to stay unlike out in reality where everyone is suffering When he and girl escape from jail, they try getting jobs and making a modest living

6 However, you can’t escape society and the justice system; the girl is wanted for vagrancy; they end up running away Jobs and Alienation: Many people in foreign countries have jobs on manufacturing lines; physical and manual labor jobs o Uncreative jobs causing alienation “Managed Heart” by Arlie Hochschild o Study of flight attendants; alienated from emotions as they are deskilled ! need to keep up a happy, commercialized (certain smile, speech as dictated by company) look despite internal problems ! no creativity nor personal expression ! seems to be a historical accident that this became stereotyped and sexualized Estranged Labor by Karl Marx The worker is alienated from: o The Product : no control of product; doesn’t give ideas o The act of producing : no control over how its made; worker is another tool or machine o One’s fellow workers : no community or sharing of construction because everything is defined by the company o One’s species being : individual is not self-fulfilling; alienated from self; cannot grow or be creative ! Wage earner does meaningless work to only make enough money for bare minimum needs Estrangement = Division is an objective reality; the process of production and results of labor are a dominating power over worker o Alienation is part of social structure o The hard work of the worker just adds to owner’s profit and power to exercise over the worker >>> the work becomes a cheaper commodity o Worker = forced labor = commodity ! “People are free to have whatever job and leave bad jobs” – supposedly “free labor” ! Wage earners have no options ! They should feel at home; to feel human; to maximize and fulfill potential Background: “I think therefore I am.” –Descartes fundamental doubt proves existence The world constructs human being; human social conditions are internalized >> becomes you human = collection of perceptions (Hume’s empiricism?”)
