4.What ethical violations might have taken place in the case of Angela Carder? Be specific, using ethical principles and theories introduced in Unit 1 The case of Angela Carder falls under Utilitarianism ethics following the directive that the decision was brought before the court and allowing them to make the final decision of her care. I feel that this was an ethical violation of her rights as the patient who was still fundamentally capable of making life or death decisions for herself. Angela Carder was aware of the potential out come of going through chemo and radiation treatments to herself and her fetus. Additionally, she knew that she would not survive the surgery and because of the court’s decision with the result that neither mother nor fetus survived. The model of ethical thinking: 1. Is it legal? In this case I do not think it was legal for the hospital to take this case to court for a decision. 2. Is it balanced? It was not balanced in my eyes because as stated above Angela Carder was very capable of making her health care decisions. 3. How does it make me feel? For this, I cannot respond, not being the physician/hospital that made the decision to take it to court. But my personal feeling is that Angela was well aware of her choices and the physician/hospital should have granted her the treatment and protocols she wanted to follow.
