Hutchings, Gale, Miller, & Breen, 2007). Thepedagogy integrates lessons to help studentsmake connections across curricula (IntegrativeLearning, n.d.). The description of theundergraduate research day is applicableacross disciplines and relevant to faculty andstaff working with undergraduate students. I9
will present my findings to the followingquestions:How do educators create an integrativelearning experience that encouragesstudents to combine curriculum, softskills, and research? How do educators mitigate the risksinvolved in planning such experiences? What are some of the planning detailsand considerations needed for asuccessful event? The Bachelor of Science in Information Science(BSIS) program is a newer, small program in aCollege of Information and Communications. Forty-two students were declared majors in fall 2015.While working with BSIS students, I realizedmost were comfortable presenting about a specifictopic usually related to an assignment. Mostassignments had rubrics or criteria that providedspecific guidelines and requirements. For example,an assignment may focus on a research topic thatconcluded with a final paper. While notuncommon, this type of assignment providesminimal engagement. Students seemed reluctantto start their own research projects or expand onclass projects as they lacked detailed requirementsand included more abstract concepts. It wasunclear how such a project might help makemeaningful connections between what wasoccurring in the classroom and their futurecareers.I addressed this gap in confidence andmeaningful connections by creating a major-specific research day, known as BSIS Day. The eventcreated an opportunity for students to gainconfidence and practice talking about their workduring research poster presentations. It alsoallowed them to link classroom and extracurricularactivities. Other benefits included fostering a senseof community by bringing together the faculty, staff, and students outside of the classroom andproviding a chance to market the program.TUJUAN PENELITIANThis research is grounded in the intersectionof three areas: 1) integrative learning, 2)undergraduate research, and 3) soft skills10
sought by employers. Published work in eacharea supports the benefits of anundergraduate research day and provides afoundation to the research questions.SUBJEK PENELITIANThis research is expected to benefit scholarsand universityASSESMENT DATAThis information is obtained from interview, observation, and self reportMETODE PENELITIANThe goals and learning outcomes of BSISDay were created based on feedback frominstructors, our undergraduate advisorycommittee, and the existing mission of theundergraduate program. Other instructorsobserved students’ reluctance to present ortalk about research, as I had in my classes.
