II. Purpose
The main purpose of TOGAF is to serve as a complimentary EA method rather than
compete with other frameworks. It enables an organization to design, evaluate and
build the right architecture instead of one for all approach. It can be tailored to meet

a specific business needs. This particular feature is what makes the TOGAF different
from other frameworks.
III. Scope
The scope of the TOGAF depends on different considerations and usually includes
business processes, strategic direction, mission, and IT components. In general, the
framework identify the core and soft enterprise units before deciding the scope of the
EA. The core enterprise units are those that are affected the most by EA and stand to
gain the most from it. The soft enterprise units are those that will see certain changes
in their capacity while working with the core units but not directly affected by the EA.
TOGAF also consider extended units which are functions outside the organization EA
scope but who work with the organization’s EA on some form. Stakeholders and
governance are some of the consideration TOGAF makes before the EA is adapted.
IV. Principles
TOGAF principles are guidance an organization use through set of values, actions and
results. The framework approach principles from three directions. The first approach
is the enterprise principle. This approach deal with decision making throughout the
organization’s enterprise architecture and set a proper guideline on how the
organization’s mission objective can be achieved. It serves as an important
component of the IT Governance strategy. The second approach is the architectural
principles which deal with how IT resources and assets are used across the
enterprise. The main purpose of the architectural principles is to insure the efficient
and productive use of the organization’s IT infrastructure. The third principle
approach is the Architecture which is the subset of the IT principle approach. It deals
with the architectural processes including the planning, implementation and
maintenance of the EA. TOGAF dictate that each principle approach directly aligns
with the organization’s business objectives and key architectural drivers.
