each person and, when possible, making sure he fully understand where the sides are coming from by putting himself in their shoes. Though he is willing to use other approaches to solve problems when he feels it is necessary, Branson prefers to collaborate. Even with the issue with Fields, he knew Fields was unwilling to cooperate but Branson, as an entrepreneur, knew he had to end the relationship without burning a bridge. In regard to severing business ties, Branson said, “Handle any problems quickly and head-on, and end the relationship as amicably as possible” (Stanger, 2012). This is an important aspect to remember in the event of future dealingswith the other party. As for myself, I also recognize the importance of addressing an issue head-on no matter how taxing or unfavorable the situation may be. The difficulties I face often relate to my own ego and my wanting to be right in a situation or getting frustrated and accommodating the other side.
RICHARD BRANSON16Knowing and doing are two different things and, even though I know I should listen and concedesome, it is much more difficult to do those things. I find myself on opposite ends of the spectrumin wanting to hold my ground and get my way or just giving up and doing whatever it is the otherperson is asking. I know neither of these are the most beneficial for either party most of the time. That being said, I do think there is a time and place for certain resolution skills and Richard Branson has enlightened me on this. The difference between myself and him is that he seems to know when to use which style. This is something I wish I was more capable of doing.CONCLUSIONIn conclusion, Richard Branson is easily one of the most successful and influential leaders in modern business. His charismatic nature and relatable persona has helped grow Virgin into one of the most recognizable and successful brands in the world that is often the envy of other corporations. Branson understands the importance of valuing each employee and the importance of being true to oneself. Personally, I believe it is these two traits that make him unique and a role model in business. I strive to be a leader that empowers those around me and isable to relinquish power to those who are capable and deserving of more responsibilities. I find itdifficult to let go of some control in situations but, after understanding more of Richard Branson’s business practices and approaches, I am more inclined to do so in the future. His ability to focus on diversity in the workplace when it comes to people and ideas is a trait that is important to any business. The environment at Virgin has fostered creativity and free thinking that generates new ideas regularly and enables employees to feel important. This is an important component of the environment at Virgin and one that I feel I can perfect in my own leadership practices.
