c. Make sure you’ve used the instructions at the top of question 2 to creat a z score variable for EDUC. Now, use SPSS to calculate the mean and standard deviation of the new Z score variable that you’ve created. Report the mean and the standard deviation of Zeduc. Are you surprised by these values? Why or why not? d. By hand, calculate the equivalent z score of someone who has 18 years of education. e. Using your Unit Normal Table and your z score from part d, what’s the percentile rank of someone who has 18 years of education? f. Now, use the Frequencies procedure in SPSS to find and report the percentile rank for a score of 18 of your sample. g. Does the percentile rank that you found from Frequencies (f) correspond to the percentile rank you found using the Unit Normal Table Z score for a value of 18 (e)? In other words, is the distribution for years of education normal? If so, then the Z score that SPSS calculates should be very close, after transforming it into an appropriate area, to the percentile rank for that same score. h. Using SPSS, create histograms for EDUC and the new variable ZEDUC. Explain why they have the same shape. i. Save and submit your .spv (output) file to Schoology.

PYC 2010 Dr. Nickels Fall 2019 ____________________________________________________________________________ Part 2: Sampling Distribution of the Mean (15 pts) Suppose a researcher wants to learn more about the mean attention span of individuals in some hypothetical population . The researcher cites that the attention span (the time in minutes attending to some task) in this population is normally distributed with the following characteristics: 20 36 2 σ ) . Based on the parameters given in this example, answer the following questions: 1. What is the population mean (μ)? 2. What is the population variance 2 (σ ) ? 3. Sketch the distribution of this population. Make sure you draw the shape of the distribution and include the mean plus and minus three standard deviations. Now say this researcher takes a sample of four individuals ( n = 4) from this population to test whether the mean attention span in this population is really 20 minutes attending to some task.
