Two exceptions to confidentiality in a healthcare

This preview shows page 4 - 5 out of 5 pages.

Two exceptions to confidentiality in a healthcare setting are suspected child abuse and elder abuse. Other excerptions include mental health and matters of greater good. If you have a patient come in that has apparent signs of either child or elder abuse then the social services would have to be called and you would have to make a report with local authorities. Another example is greater god and that could actually be something like swine flu or perhaps you receive information that the patient is going to blow up a building (Caldwell & Conner, 2014). HIPAA is meant to protect everyone’s health information. This paper covers what they do to protect that information, along with what happens if someone breaks that information. There are exceptions to HIPAA and that is meant to also protect the patient and others involved. If I ever run into a situation where a patient left behind their paperwork, I would want to follow HIPAA as much as possible because I would not want to have the penalties listed above happen to me. 4
