representing another religion apart from catholic. Myth is used to explain Antonio's anxiety in meeting and accepting different religious beliefs. Generally, Anaya uses the Spanish language to illustrate the community culture and vivid dreams to show Antonio's concerns. Antonio faces both internal and external battles during his childhood experience. The primary conflict is the two competing heritages, Marez, and Luna. The Luna heritage required him to become a wandering cowboy while the Luna heritage required him to become a priest like his mother's brothers and also a farmer. Antonio also faces an external battle with his peers who did not support nor accept the idea that his family is taking care of Ultimo. In these two battles, Antonio encounters them by making his path; for example, he chose a path that combined both his mother and father heritages. Antonio also faces an internal battle of whether to believe in God or witchcraft. Many evils were surrounding him and deaths like the death of his friends like Ultima and Lupito. All the fatalities and sins made Antonio question his faith, causing him to lose his innocence. These bad things made him question whether to believe in God or not.
