MT_SchDEU2 argued:The technology-assisted instruction is not moreeffected than the traditional teaching methods, because mathematics is not just on a computer, itis all around you. Learners need to explore theworld. For learners to really learn they need to beoutside.Similarly, all teachers believed that computers wouldnot replace teachers becauselearners need social contact(FT_SchDEU1) anda person to have a relationship with tosupport learning(FP_SchDEU1).TeachersPerceptions Regarding the Support forUsing Educational Technology MathematicsEducationFindings from the interviews showed that teachersmostly rely on the support of their colleagues to assistthem when technical problems occurred while usingeducational technology during mathematics lessons. One setback was that the male colleague, who istechnologically competent according to the principal, was teaching most of the times and was sometimes notavailabletoassistduetohisownteachingresponsibilities. FP_SchDEU1 explained that she gavethe male colleague one teaching period less for him toassisttheotherteachers.Attheotherschool,MT_SchDEU2 explained that he assisted the teachers bycompiling a media concept consisting of the availableeducational technology at the school, their purposes, andhow to use it.Hindering Factors that Influenced MathematicsTeachersIntegration of Educational TechnologyFor teachers to use educational technology inmathematics education they need to have access to thephysical devices. Teachers at SchDEU1 had limited useof educational technology at their school because of thelack of funding opportunities from their government. For instance, this school only had eight tablets, asmentioned earlier, and learners had shared access to thecomputer room once a week. SchDEU1 had twocomputers per classroom that roughly 30 learners had toshare. The next quotes highlight the need for educationaltechnology:I think it is better when every learner in the class canhave a tablet and that there are at least two computersin the classrooms.(FP_SchDEU1)I dont use a computer in the classroom, because wedont have computers in the classroom. It would begood to have a computer in the classroom for learners,or tablets for every learner.(FT_SchDEU1)
Saal et al. / Educational Technology in Mathematics8 / 13I dont think we have enough technologies. Thecomputer room is also used for other projects so I cantalways use this room.(MT_SchDEU2)MT_SchDEU2alsoemphasisedtheneedforcontinuous professional development that can betransferred to the mathematics classroom since he couldnot apply anything that he learned at a training sessionin his classroom. FT_SchDEU1 also stressed the need forcontinuous professional development, since technologyis always evolving. She explained:I would like to receivetraining on how to use the whiteboard. Training should alsooccur when new devices get to the school and when somethingis developing with these devices.
