Many of the social structures now exist due to the resurgence of the Republic of Chile’s democracy run government that transitioned from the military dictatorship led by General Augusto Pinochet that held onto the Chilean government from 1973 through the mid-1980s (Carpenter, et al., 2008, p. 13-14). The democratic government has worked hard to bring in gender equality and raise the education level of Chile. GLOBAL BUSINESS CULTURAL ANALYSIS: CHILE 11 this has a negative influence on women’s ability to advance into managerial positions (Javalgi, Scherer, Sanchez, Rojas, Daza, Hwang, & Yan, 2011, 236-237). Chile has made great strides in gender equality in political positions to include Michelle Bachelet as its President from 2006 to 2011 but still lacks such a gender equality amongst the business manager positions within its companies (2011, p. 239). How are these elements and dimensions integrated by locals conducting business in Chile? Communication Business is conducted within Chile’s borders in the Spanish language as it is the national language. The Chilean Spanish is different from other dialects of Spanish as it has been influenced by the languages of the indigenous people of Chile, specifically the Mapuche. The people of Chile do not have many, if any, issues communicating with each other to conduct business transactions. Language proficiency has, however, become a requirement in secondary schools so that the students can learn to actively communicate in the global business world by teaching the students English (Larenas’, 2011, p. 86). The Chilean government wants to provide the students with a “linguistic tool that can enable them to understand and communicate information, knowledge and technologies as well as to appreciate other cultures (2011, p. 86) The goal of the Chilean government is to prepare the next generation for conducting business on a global scale, not just in Chile. One recent change in the communication culture of Chile revolves around an increase in the digital world. Chile has put forth a lot of effort and money to increase the digital skills of its population, specifically in its young children. Digital skills have been added into the school curriculums in “1998 for secondary education and 2008 for primary education” (Cabello &

GLOBAL BUSINESS CULTURAL ANALYSIS: CHILE 12 Claro, 2017, p. 249). Introducing the perspective that digital skills are important and add value to their knowledge and abilities through policies and public conversations is viewed as being vital to the future growth of the Chilean economy (2017, p. 249-250). Religion The influence of religion can be seen on the Chilean economy in several ways. The biggest influence comes from the Roman Catholic Church. Chile is known for its family first beliefs which comes from the teachings of the Roman Catholics and Protestants alike. This family first belief system heavily effects the Chilean economy through numerous religious
