17 The Null Hypotheses H o : There is no significant correlation between the benefits of using Facebook and academic performance. H o1 : There is no significant correlation between the constraints of using Facebook and academic performance. Significance of the Study This study provides information and additional outlook on the impact of Facebook to STEM students and how it can be used in relation to their academics. Thus, benefitting the study are the various sectors as follows: Students would find this research handy as this would give them inputs on the effects of Facebook on their academic performance that would help them manage their tasks and priorities properly. Parents would gain knowledge on how they should make an approach to their students in using the internet to improve their academic performance. Teachers would have a wide understanding of the factors involved in the academic performance of their students. School administrators would be able to conduct seminars and orientation about Facebook usage and how it can be used as one of the instruments in enhancing student’s academic performance. Future researchers may use this as reference that can broaden the further study of the impacts of Facebook to students especially STEM majors.
18 Scope and Limitation The scope of this study focuses on the experiences of students engaging to Facebook wherein 60 respondents were selected – all are from Grade 12 STEM students in the University of Cebu Senior High School Pri. This study limits the benefits and constraints of Facebook towards their academics. The researchers did not disclose any of the participant’s identity and background. Students answers with respect to the Facebook use and its impact on their academics is the main topic of this research, however, it depends on the students true or false opinions which are highly regarded by the researchers. Definition of Terms The following terms are conceptually and operationally defined based on how they used in this study: Academic performance is the extent to which a student, teacher, or institution has achieved their short or long-term educational goals. It is also a component of capacity to focus, time administration abilities, student’s characteristics, scholarly skill, and time spent on the online interpersonal organization (Aliyas et al., 2012). Benefits refer to a good or helpful result or effect. Constraints refer to something that limits or restricts someone or something.
