But, on its own, a mental model is not enough. It doesn’t help the programmer code the system or thevisual designer bring it to life. For this reason we need a third model, the representation or design model.Beginners, Experts & Intermediates- designing for different experience levelsMost computer users know all too well that buying a new cell phone or opening the shrink-wrap on anew software product augurs several days of frustration and disappointment spent learning the newinterface. On the other hand, many experienced users of a digital product may find themselvescontinually frustrated because that product always treats them like rank beginners. It seems impossibleto find the right balance between catering to the needs of the first-timer and the needs of the expert.6
HUMANMACHINEINTERACTIONOne of the eternal conundrums of interaction and interface design is how to address the needs of bothbeginning users and expert users with a single, coherent interface. Some programmers and designerschoose to abandon this idea completely, choosing instead to segregate the user experiences by creatingwizards for beginners and burying critical functionality for experts deep in menus. Of course, no onewants to deal with the extra labor associated with moving through a wizard, but the leap from there toknowing what esoteric command to select from a series of long menus is usually a jump off a rather tallcliff into a shark-infested moat of implementation-model design. What, then, is the answer? The solutionto this predicament lies in a different understanding of the way users master new concepts and tasks.Understanding UsersAs technology evolves, the goal of UX/HCI is to make it easier for people to use all kinds of digitaltechnologies to accomplish their goals. This includes reducing the barriers to using these tools, whateverthe physical ability of the user or the nature of the task; creating a positive user experience includingvisual and structural elements; ensuring the user can easily navigate the site/device and find what theyare looking for; and creating content which is understandable and accessible to the user. The iSchool is exploring ways to make computers and applications smarter in discerning what the user istrying to accomplish. The ultimate goal is to increase user satisfaction, improve efficiency and make itmore likely that the user will solve their information problem.iSchool research centers on user interface design, increasing software development efficiency anddesigning mobile applications for health, accessibility, the developing world and dozens of otherdomains.Modeling Users- Personas & GoalsModels are used extensively in design, development, and the sciences. They are powerful tools forrepresenting complex structures and relationships for the purpose of better understanding or visualizingthem. Without models, we are left to make sense of unstructured, raw data, without the benefit of the big
