Formal or legitimate authority over activities related to the staff member’s specialty. Ex.) A human resource staff manager may have functional authority when there is a question of discrimination in hiring Conferring functional authority is probably the most effective way to use staff positions because the organization can take advantage of specialized expertise while also maintaining a chain of command CHAPTER 17 ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION Vertical Communication o Communication that flows up and down the organization, usually along formal reporting lines o Takes place between managers and their superiors and subordinates and may involve several different levels of the organization o Upward Communication Consists of messages from subordinates to superiors Typical content of upward communication is: Requests Information that the lower-level manager thinks is of importance to the higher-level manager Responses to requests from the higher-level manager Suggestions Complaints Financial information Upward Communication is more subject to distortion than downward communication o Downward Communication Occurs when information flows down the hierarchy from superiors to subordinates Typical content of downward communication is: Directives on how something is to be done The assignment of new responsibilities Performance feedback And general information that the higher-level manager thinks will be of value to the lower-level manager Horizontal Communication o Communication that flows laterally within the organization o Involves colleagues and peers at the same level of the organization and may involve individuals from several different organizational units Ex.) operations manager communicating with marketing manager o Horizontal communication probably occurs more among managers than nonmanagers o Purposes It facilitates coordination among interdependent units Can be used for joint problem solving Digital Communication o Use of company owned technology (phones, computers, emails, etc.) is the number one reason for people getting fired today o You should not be using company resources to conduct personal business on your company electronics o If you must fire someone, and need to find something to fire you over, all Brad would have to do is call IT and have them check to see if you have been using company resources for personal business. (ex.
