As I was walking some of the emotions that I was experiencing was happiness, due to the fact that it is not only springtime and that I am able to get out and walk, but with walking this helps boost the serotonin levels in my brain, which will allow for me to sleep better at night. Other emotions that I was experiencing was the feeling of not being stressed and/or anxious and with walking this allowed for this emotion to be replaced with happiness and contentment. I will admit that when I was doing this exercise, I was zoning out so to speak and not really thinking about anything except for my walk and how I was feeling during my walk. When I get to the point of zoning out, this allows for any tension that I am feeling to disappear and to be replaced with a relaxed walking posture, which indicates to me that I am stress-free and that my day is off to a beautiful start. Walking also brings about a feeling of enjoyment, which means I am feeling not only relaxed, but I am at peace, but at the same time I become reflective on my walk. When I become reflective, I tend to become sad for a moment, but then the sadness is replaced with a feeling of peacefulness. With walking this is not only a great way to start my day off, but with walking this helps bring my thoughts and emotions into check and I can ask myself why I am feeling that way and what I can do to remedy that particular 36

thought and/emotion. By the end of the walk, what I am feeling physically is that the stress has been replaced with positive emotions and that I am not as tense as I was when I first started my walk. Summary Walking is not only beneficial to one’s health, but it has an extraordinary impact on the individual’s emotional and physical well-being. Walking meditation helps get the individual ready to notice the movements with each of their feet and to take notice of how their body is during the start of the walk. With using a slow course of action and slow movement of the body, this allows for the individual to develop an awareness of their body but allows for them to become more aware of their emotions, thoughts, and sensations. In the end, we don’t realize it that with walking it is getting us from one point to the next, but with walking meditation this is allowing us to get rid of any stress or other feeling that we are feeling during that particular time and allows for us to focus on our body and how our body moves with each step we take (Stahl & Goldstein, 2010). Unit 6: Relaxation Techniques 1: Breathing, Meditation, and Mental Imagery Information to Remember: Key Learning Point: Restrictive meditation or exclusive meditation is a form of meditation that focuses on one object. With the focus on that one object this will allow for the exclusion of all other thoughts and allows for an increased self-awareness that will then promote for relaxation.
