In this conversation with Pichot, the expectation is for him to avoid Pichot’s glance and not look at the white man unless spoken to. It is important to note that Grant understands the rules, and he can play by them when it is important. He can also push things, as when he does not acknowledge Pichot when the latter walks into the room. 4. What is the agreement arrived at by the end of the chapter? What can you infer from Pichot’s comments? Pichot agrees to talk to the sheriff, but only when Henri sees him. Pichot implies that he will not go out of his way to discuss this issue. Miss Emma tells him that if he does not go, she will be back again tomorrow, but this time on bended knees.

4 A Lesson Before Dying TEACHER’S COPY STUDY GUIDE Chapter Four 1. Why does Grant try to hurt his aunt when he tells her he will be eating in Bayonne? Grant feels that he has been forced into this plan of making Jefferson into a man. He resents both the power she has over him and her threat to kick him out of her house if he refuses to cooperate. 2. Name some of the ways the town of Bayonne is divided between whites and blacks. There are separate Catholic churches, separate movie theaters, and separate elementary schools. It seems that all the establishments for the blacks are “back of town.” 3. Grant is feeling terrible and calls someone named Vivian. What do you learn about her in this chapter? Vivian Baptiste is a beautiful, 5’7” black woman, with long black hair she twists up in a bun. She is a teacher like Grant and is presently married with two children, but is separated and waiting for a divorce. She and Grant love each other, and he seems to think that all will be well if they just get the kids and leave the town. 4. In Grant’s confusion and anger, he flings many questions at Vivian, all dealing with his job of making Jefferson into a man. List some of the questions he asks her. Do you think he is really asking himself the questions? Answers may vary. Example: “I still don’t know if the sheriff will even let me visit him. And suppose he did; what then? What do I say to him? Do I know what a man is? Do I know how a man is supposed to die?… Am I supposed to tell someone how to die who has never lived?” “…Suppose I was allowed to visit him, and suppose I reached him and made him realize that he was as much a man as any other man; then what?…So what will I have accomplished? What will I have done? Why not let the hog die without knowing anything?” Grant probably feels that Jefferson would be better off dying with no more knowledge than he has. Answers may vary. Example: It appears that Grant does want some advice and is not simply getting his frustrations out. 5. At the end of all these questions, how does Vivian respond?
