At around 10:31, the two planes collided over the Grand Canyon and fell to the canyon floor. III. The Salt Lake controller should have informed both aircraft of the pending collision. Clearance by air traffic controllers to allow TWA 2 to fly that close to United 718 was a dangerous decision that ultimately cost the lives of 128 people. IV. Development of Alternative Actions Alternative Action 1. Both flights should have switched their first destination on the flight plan. Advantages. This would have allowed no chance of a collisions, as both planes would have been miles apart.
