Taylor could not have survived without her daughter, Turtle. When she is close to losing her, Taylor needs Estevan and Esperanza’s help to adopt Turtle legally. Taylor has to make the adoption legitimate in order to keep her, but she has no idea where her birth parents are. She needs Estevan and Esperanza to pose as Turtle’s parents. When she asks them if they would do it, they “didn’t want to think about it. They told me, then and there, they wanted to do it” (283). Taylor would not have survived without Turtle, but she could not have adopted her by her own power. Estevan and Esperanza helped her survive by posing as Turtle’s parents, as in the bean trees and the bugs that help them survive.Humans cannot survive without the assistance of others. Taylor and her friends helped each other to survive. Without these close relationships, Taylor might be wandering the streets of Tucson, Esperanza might have committed suicide after all, and Taylor might have lost Turtle. Everyone comes across rough patches in their lives. Throughout these rough spots, people need strong, solid support systems to help them get through. Taylor was fortunate enough to have an excess of friends who would do
Wheeler .anything to help her. Her friends make sure she survives, and the helper bugs make sure the bean trees survive.
