Teacher’s Page Things Fall Apart Wrap Up Proverbs Objective: Analyzing and interpreting proverbs Activity One of the most prominent literary devices used in Achebe’s Things Fall Apart is the proverb. Beginning with “He who brings kola brings life‚” on page three, Achebe reveals and explains the culture of the African Ibo through the use of proverbs. His technique is an effective tool because the reader is allowed to see the culture as the Africans live it; the reader needs no further explanation or clarification in the process. Locate twelve effective proverbs used in furthering the message of the novel or its thematic concepts. Complete the Chart of Proverbs by providing the page number of the proverb, your interpretation of its meaning, and why it is effective in the novel. An example has been provided for you. Note to Teacher: The proverbs in the novel are too numerous to list here, but a few have been included for you. You may want to divide the class into groups and assign the three parts of the novels to the groups. This can be an effective assignment in relating the importance of Achebe’s style of writing to the promotion of the thematic concepts and the clarification of culture.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
