people focus on acquiring goods and services that they cannot acquire legitimately, and this, in turn, causes them to engage in crime ( McIlwaine, & Moser, 2014 ). Poverty is also a threat to a healthy society. Indeed, poverty in the society manifests in malnourished children, ill-health children, and children that can hardly attend schooling. The consequence of poor health due to poverty manifests in a high mortality rate, high venerability to chronic conditions, and reduced life expectancy. A report by the World Health Organization in 2018 revealed that an estimated 400000 deaths in the world are due to poverty so that the victims cannot afford appropriate medication or preventive care (World Health Organization, 2018). Some of the deaths also happen during birth, where the mothers are unable to get professional health care due to poverty. The research published by the World Health Organization cites poverty as the reason for the consistently increasing mortality rate in developing countries.
Poverty also manifests in cheap women labor and children labor, as the vulnerable in the society look for livelihood. Apparently, women accept doing cheap labor as the only alternative to finding a livelihood for their children. The little is barely enough, which compels the young children to work and find a livelihood. It is during their working endeavors that the children get introduced to an adverse environment that exposes them to antisocial and harmful behaviors such as drug abuse.
