The article assesses two common metaphors, which are present in a number of organizations, machine and organism. Machine metaphors used to describe organizational that use a hierarchical structure, with a primary goal of increased sales, revenue, and wealth. This metaphor places emphasis on the organizational ahead of the members, signaling that the members are viewed as a “functional component” or enablers of primary organizational goals. [Bar13] Machine metaphor separates human and organizations in such a way that of the organization no longer consider humans as constituents to their success. Similarly, organization as an organism places the organization in a sub-category, implying different outcomes for both the workers and the business. Organism metaphor focuses on survivability over sustainability, creating systems and relationships to foster growth. The article concludes that machine and organism metaphors do perpetuate a language and understanding that dehumanizes work and organizations, and that further research is necessary to adopt new metaphors to facilitate sustainability of organizations.[Bar13] The points of this article are valid, and should be considered by managers at all levels.
