The significance of this setting is to point out the main plot within the story, which happens to fall on the two couple. The couple’s house is worn down because of this quote.

Being able to set the tone at the beginning of the story makes a huge impression on the rest of the story and know what the story is about. Everywhere they are wisest. They are the magi . The plot of the story is the two couples sacrificing what is valuable to them in order to buy a special gift for Christmas to the significant other. This plot shows the real love that each of the couple has for one another, rather than just focusing on gift giving the whole story long. They had to sacrifice what they valued most to make sure the significant will be able to feel special on Christmas.
