93 Vault Guide to the Top 100 Law Firms, 2018 Edition WACHTELL, LIPTON, ROSEN & KATZ 2016 Annual Accolades Three partners were featured in American Lawyer ’s annual Dealmakers of the Year publication for their creativity and business savvy work. Andy Brownstein and Mark Gordon were featured as Dealmakers of the Year for their representation of Valspar in its $11.3 billion acquisition by Sherwin-Williams. Josh Cammaker was featured as a Dealmaker of the Year for his representation of Lexmark International, Inc. in its $3.6 billion acquisition by a consortium led by Apex Technology Co. Ltd. And PAG Asia Capital. Wachtell Lipton litigation Partner Marc Wolinsky was the recipient of the 2017 Servant of Justice Award from the Legal Aid Society. GETTING HIRED Vault’s Verdict: A gig at Wachtell Lipton is one of the toughest tickets in town. To score an offer, you’ll need to show major smarts, fantastic grades from an elite law school and be ready to work directly with clients from the get-go. And don’t expect too much small talk; Wachtell Lipton interviewers ask far more substantive and challenging questions than most firms. Hiring Process • “Hiring at the firm is very competitive. The vast majority of associates are hired from a handful of top schools. At those schools, a candidate needs to excel academically to be competitive. It is a difficult place to get hired—period.” • “We want people who are smart thinkers and quick on their feet. It’s also important to be a fun, interesting, personable person, as we spend a lot of time together.” • “Law school, grades are incredibly important. Firm generally only hires from the top 7 and some others.” • “Top law school and good grades help. Clerkships help, but are not at all required. I think the firm hires a lot from Yale, Harvard, Columbia, and NYU.” Interview Questions • “The firm asks more substantive questions than anywhere else I interviewed. Candidates should be able to fluidly talk about all aspects of any substantive matter mentioned in their application materials.” • “The majority of questions were typical interview questions pertaining to professional interests, experience, resume, etc. However, there were a few interviews that delved deeper into challenging questions and gauging the ability to support and articulate a position.” • “The interview was much more substantive than my other interviews. If you wrote a college or graduate thesis, be prepared to discuss at length. If you worked in a particular industry prior to law school, know what is going on in the industry currently (and even better, have an opinion about it).” • “Very difficult interview questions.”

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
