naturally our mood will happy as well as our sense of approach to one another, our body language will also be comfortable. When use of our language it would be informal because we are comfortable with one another and we would choose to speak in a different manner. For example, Shelly,” Hi girlfriend, how are you?” Claire, “Ohhh girl, where do I even start hey #laughing”.Shelly, “From the beginning durh# giggles”Now using that kind of language is appropriate between friends but not in the workplace or to your employer or employees. When use of language in a workplace it is formal. Respect has to be shown no matter how you know a person. Let’s take a conversation between my employer and myself.Mr. Peterson, “Good day Miss Tyson”Claire, “Good day Sir, how are you?”Mr. Peterson, “I am well thank you. Miss Tyson may I please have those reports by the end of the day.”Claire,” Will do Sir.”Does it mean to say in the first conversation I disrespected Shelly by not calling her madam or by not using formal language with her as I did in my second conversation? No, respect can be show in many different ways it is how you use it that makes a difference. This also is shown in your use of language and how you go about using it and your approach to it in different environments and situations, as well as to different people. At times some people may be having a bad day and way they greet you or speak to you may not be their usual tone of manner. Is that to say you respond in the say way they do, of cause not. You should always be calm and speak in a sincere voice approach in a situation like that.Let’s look at another scenario, I remember Mike telling me this story about his roommate John. Mike and John go to the same camps and live in the same room they have only known each other for two months. John is not from South Africa and he can barely speak English, so they decide to go to a local food market store for groceries, Mike has completed his shopping while John struggles to look for one more item. He tries to explain to Mike what he needs but Mike does not understand him so the two become frustrated at each other. When they decided to eventually calm down, John gets an idea to rather draw a picture of what he needs so that Mike may understand so John draws a box of his favourite cereal, as Mike looks at the picture they start to laugh at each other as to how they got so frustrated over a box of cereal. Another language we may have forgotten is Sign language. Sign language is not just for people who cannot hear, it may also be used for understanding one another through different languages and situations such as John’s.I believe that your linguistic identity should reflect the type of person you are and how you carry yourself in different environments. It show reflect your tone of speech, the manner in which you choose to speak or in what language you chose to
speak in, it should reflect in different situations as to how you portray yourself be it in the workplace, amongst friends, in church or at home.
