We see her manipulative ways when she tries every which way to convince her family not to go to Florida, simply because she did not want to go. Instead of expressing the real reason, she makes the excuse of taking the children “somewhere else for a change so they would see different parts of the world and be broad. They never have been to east Tennessee"(2). However, although her son Bailey ignores her pleads, the son ultimately looses all interest in trip altogether. Contrarily, Bailey was a short tempered man who tried to accommodate his family although he did not necessarily agree with them. Grandmother always tried to convince Bailey, her son, that what he was thinking was not what he wanted to do. Bailey is a very high strung person and at times doesn’t know how to control his own emotions. He clearly doesn’t want to go see the plantation on the way to Florida, but his children wants to go. He clearly says, ‘No,’ while “His jaw was as rigid as a horseshoe” (16), but no one seems to take consideration of Bailey’s feelings. Instead it is clear the grandmother has more control over the family than he does. In fact she helps pushes the idea of going to the plantation. Bailey’s lack of control allows himself to be pushed around by his mother. Then, the Children’s mother character can be summed up as absent-minded. She doesn’t respond to the grandmother when spoken to.When the grandmother address the mother she doesn’t even respond “They never have been to east Tennessee. The children's mother didn't seem to hear her...”(2). The children's mother doesn’t seem to care about how her children act because she doesn’t try to correct them when they are being disrespectful. Her role sheds light that this family is dysfunctional because as a parent she can't even control and/or teach her kids decroum which is very alarming. Next, June Star was not very mannerly to anyone in the story. Although kids will be kids June Star and John Wesley were disrespectful and unmannered to their parents, grandparents, adults, their state and the Misfit gang. John Wesley talked very disrespectfully to adults. For example, when he states that he hates Georgia calling it lousy. June Star is disrespectful when she lashes out, rudely, towards her grandmother when she stated "she wouldn't stay at home to be queen for a day” and "she wouldn't stay at home for a million bucks."(6-7). June Star has no manners when Red Sammy’s wife asks “would you like to come be my little girl?" Instead of saying no politely she lashes out saying, "No I certainly wouldn't...I
