still used her and left her. Her husband may not have had such cruel intentions but the idea is similar and it would be impossible for Nellie to ignore the familiar and painful feelings. Nellie’s husband left her because he did not know she was raped before he married her. It is normal to think a married couple would get to know each other better once they begin living together. However, this is a crucial part of Nellie’s history. It is a major event that has made her who she is but her own husband did not know this until after they were married. This is another social reflection of the times. Couples were lucky if they fell in love after they were married, but rarely married for love. They might as well have been complete strangers and Nellie’s husband was clearly a stranger on a personal level. Nellie ends up dying as a result of her husband leaving her. A woman’s life consisted of growing up and getting married in her day. Her duty was to be a good wife. No one was about to marry a divorced woman who was not a virgin in the first place. She had nothing left to live for. This goes back to Nellie’s young mind set. Maybe the ending would be the same but it would be imagined that a grown woman would be able to deal with the situation better than a child. Nellie was never fully able to develop mature thought. She was stuck in the mindset of an eight-year- old child.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
