Genes are the unit of inheritance, the DNA mechanism by which traits are passed from parent to offspring. DNA forms a double helix (this is important later) composed of 4 kinds of base pairs, called necleotides Understand the concept of gene expression. The central theorem is that DNA codes for protein. The transfer of energy is required for life. The scientific process is making observations, forming a logical hypothesis that can be tested (that’s important, that it can be tested), and testing the hypothesis, obtaining results, and interpreting those results. There are two main types of data gathered by biologists: qualitative (a “quality” or characteristic is measured and recorded, descriptions) and quantitative (a “quantity” or recorded measurements, numbers). A hypothesis is “an explanation” on trial. We do not try to “prove” a hypothesis, rather we want to accept our explanation for an observation or reject that explanation after an experiment is run. Experiments have three main ingredients: variables, control group and experimental group
