people that are reasonable think with reason instead of desire people created cities for security from the wild, not to come together with people people did not get married for love, but spouse was chosen to aid in security of entire family mother nature used to take care of us, be we have damaged her so much, that now we must take care of nature Pioneer notion of nature: American (hostile, man wins), Canadian (hostile, man loses) Idea of nature’s indifference; if man fights nature, he is fighting human nature Nature is considered to be chaos, there are no rules; morals belong to the human world, and the natural world is amoral (the rules don’t apply, survival of the fittest)

It is Randal’s duty to take care of his family “sick at the heart”; he realizes that he has left his family in a bad situation, he had no business going after personal desire in the woods while he could have been doing his duties (private vs. public) o #3: revenge; true love means that they would not be meeting in the woods in secret Randal lies to his mother to protect his true love, as well as protects his mother from his love When you breakup with someone, you do not just immediately fall out of love with that person She did not love him, but had a passionate connection with him, and he with her The women would have not cared enough to murder him is she did not have the passion for him, the feelings towards him “I will leave her hell in fire” this is a curse; you never want a dead man to curse you, he will get to god first and tell him that you should go to hell this love will poison the family, just as the eels poisoned Randal Edward - Incremental repetition - Voice: alteration of voice between male and female; form of question and answer - Edward still has his sword out and it is dripping in blood - He killed his hawk and his mother doesn’t believe him, being that the hawks blood would not be that red (she says) - Next, he tries to say that he killed the horse, but his mother still doesn’t believe him because he looks like he is suffering and he has a lot of horses - Repetition of the word ‘O’ - In modern times we use ‘Oh” o Surprise o Doubt o Meaning depends entirely on tone and context o You have to determine its meaning yourself - The mother and son seem very close, because the son follows his mother, where when she give him advice he takes it - Edward kills the hawk because it was ‘good’ - Edward kills the horse because it was ‘fair (beautiful) and free (spiritual)’ - Edward kills his dad because he is ‘dear’ (out of love) - He lies to his mother when she asks him about his sword - Edward finally admits to killing his father (why he is distraught) - Why would he kill his father if he would be so devastated?

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
