Major floods in Tulsa, Oklahoma caused citizens and the government to improve its technical capabilities, organizational structure and funding for flood control. The city banned development in floodplains and began relocating other building out of it. Through their efforts by 1992 Tulsa earned the lowest flood insurance rates in the country. After securing a federal grant, Tulsa began creating public-private partnerships for the mitigation of other extreme events. This is a great example of a U.S. city taking initiative and working toward the goal of a disaster- resistant and sustainable community. (Carol Rasmussen NASA Earth Science News team, 2014) This initiative can be emulated in cities across the United States to improve disaster preparedness nationally. Measures that need to be taken to prevent harm from these environmental hazards in the future. Being well prepared for an event is much safer than waiting until the event is upon us. Research has shown that certain extreme events will continue to increase in occurrence and severity posing a multitude of health risks, some unforeseen. It is imperative that we prepare now
