2. What is the relevant legislation for the following: a. Anti-discrimination The Australian Human Rights Commission identifies the following legislation that may be applicable to anti-discrimination (): • Age Discrimination Act 2004 • Australian Human Rights Commission Act 1986 • Disability Discrimination Act 1992 • Racial Discrimination Act 1975 • Sex Discrimination Act 1984 Discrimination on the basis of race, colour, sex, religion, political opinion, national extraction, social origin, age, medical record, criminal record, marital or relationship status, impairment, mental, intellectual or psychiatric disability, physical disability, nationality, sexual orientation, and trade union activity. Also covers discrimination on the basis of the imputation of one of the above grounds. Commonwealth laws and the state/territory laws generally overlap and prohibit the same type of discrimination. As both state/territory laws and Commonwealth laws apply, you must comply with both. Unfortunately, the laws apply in slightly different ways and there are some gaps in the protection that is offered between different states and territories and at a Commonwealth level. To work out your obligations you will need to check the Commonwealth legislation and the state or territory legislation in each state in which you operate. You will also need to check the exemptions and exceptions in both the Commonwealth and state/territory legislation as an exemption or exception under one Act will not mean you are exempt under the other. For example, see the attached schedule of coverage. See the tables below for detailed information on each federal, state and territory Act. b. Consumer protection The Competition and Consumer Act (‘CCA’) 2010 ensures that trading is fair, and consumers are protected. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) administers the CCA and should be consulted for the latest information regarding fair trading and consumer protection. Broadly, it covers:

product safety and labelling unfair market practices price monitoring industry codes industry regulation airports, electricity, gas, telecommunications mergers and acquisitions. c. Copyright Copyright protection applies automatically in Australia, protecting the original expression of ideas. It is not necessary to register copyright though it is possible to use a copyright notice to deter potential infringement. Copyright protection is provided under the Copyright Act 1968 though several legislative changes were made in 2004. The effect of uncommented amendments is not shown in the text of the compiled law. Any uncommented amendments affecting the law are accessible on the Legislation Register. The details of amendments made up to, but not commenced at, the compilation date is underlined in the endnotes.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
