N4685 Capstone Seminar Boyd 2019 In the (2015) peer-reviewed journal article, “Helping Your Patients Set Achievable Goals”, Lee describes the importance of goal setting which is ultimately just a fancy way of saying developing a plan, as this is described as the is an evidenced-based vital first step in achieving success. A method that has been shown to be highly effective in setting goals that lead to success is the SMART goal method, which is an acronym standing for goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (Lee, 2015). The article goes on to outline ways that setting SMART goals can be achieved when caring for patients and some of the barriers that are sometimes present when trying to set SMART goals, which can includes difficulty in articulating what the goal is in the first place. The article is written for the nurse with the hope to be able to help develop SMART goals alongside the patient that allows the patient to be involved in the process of their improved health. Some of the tips to help achieve setting SMART goals includes motivational interviewing, storytelling, flexibility, and success planning to obtain a plan that leads to success (Lee, 2015).
